Word on the Street is….Corona nor dae Salone. (many don’t believe that the virus has made its way to Sierra Leone).

It has taken me a few days to process this and even put pen to paper to address this. The “Word on the Street” is that “Corona nor dae Salone” (many don’t believe that the virus has made its way to Sierra Leone). I have to admit; while I do think the virus is here, evident by the few cases that we have had, I firmly believe it is not as prevalent as it is in the US and other places because if it were, this country would be in deep, deep trouble.

Coming from the US, I am armed with Lysol spray, Clorox wipes, hand sanitizers galore, masks (all types), you name it I have it. I came with a mindset of adhering to all the CDC, WHO guidelines, but what I was not ready for is the total disregard for social distancing. I will never be comfortable with someone in my personal space without a mask!!!. Six-feet apart is as foreign as the visitors (JC) themselves.

I have only been here a little under a week, and my observations have almost turned me into a believer of “the word on the street.” There is some Government sensitization on the radio, TV, etc. but for the most part, this in this country, the mask is worn as a “chin mask” instead of a “face mask” ( can’t help laughing every time I see one). Every time I ask, “where is your mask?” the answer I get is either it’s in my bag or ah Corona nor dae you (we don’t have Corona). To protect my peace, I have decided to let my kinfolks be.

On a positive note, I continue to applaud the airport for their efforts. I received an email confirmation of my negative COVID test 4 days after it was taken. Not bad for a third world country.
I pray God continues to cover Sierra Leone, and the development of a vaccine is successful. I will continue to protect myself as best as I can.

Excuse the typos focus on the information.😏
